Small Businesses Are Essential for a Healthy Economy
Empty properties in the area where I live are a big problem – in the town centre there is even a building with offices to let which is mostly unoccupied. With so many businesses folding in the last few years, demand has slipped, which has also caused huge problems for the high street. For the economy to get back on track could be a long wait.
The increase of empty shops and offices reduces the quality of town centres around the country, so it is imperative that local authorities do their utmost to encourage new businesses to take up residence. Perhaps there is an opportunity to encourage an increase in independent, local businesses – previously thriving towns lost much of their character as local firms began to die out.
Smaller businesses also in many ways allow for greater flexibility and innovation, whereas larger corporations often have internal resistances which slow change. A healthy economy needs a mixture of both.
